Due to the circle drive construction, the front entrance and lobby at CUSR Center are closed. CUSR participants and other patrons can access the facility through the west side of the building next to the Lindsey Tennis Center. The west entrance will be locked, but patrons can call for assistance at 217-819-3980 or ring the doorbell.
All areas surrounded by fencing are part of the construction area. CU Special Recreation staff ask that patrons and participants do not enter the construction area for any reason for their own safety.
Parking for the CUSR Center is still available in the Sholem Aquatic Center lot south of Sangamon Drive.
Project Purpose
The All Abilities Activities Hub will be an accessible outdoor space that prioritizes inclusion for people of all abilities and ages. Funded by the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant from the State of Illinois, the space will offer opportunities for educational and clinical therapies and will be designed to support community engagement, connections with nature, and enrichment with exercise and play equipment.
The All Abilities Activities Hub will be built directly north of the CUSR Center in Centennial Park at 2212 Sangamon Drive.
In addition to the All Abilities Activities Hub, the grant will fund the construction of a circle drive in front of the CU Special Recreation Center for easy bus pick-up and drop-off, accessible pathways to the rear of the building, and walking paths to select exercise and play equipment. The new drive and pathways will increase pedestrian safety along Sangamon Drive during peak traffic times.
Groundbreaking
The groundbreaking for the All Abilities Activities Hub was held on Tuesday, May 26. Local and state officials, including Governor Pritzker, were in attendance to celebrate the start of the project.
